2011: New Year’s Resolutions

I’m not normally one for making resolutions, as I tend to forget I’ve made them.  Or, to achieve them, I cheat!  One year I resolved to pair up all the socks in my sock drawer and then threw out all the mismatched patterned socks and purchased twelve pairs of plain black socks.  That way, each time I opened the drawer I just had to pull out two socks and they’d always match…

In last Saturday’s The Sun, Jeremy Clarkson wrote that resolutions were pointless because, by saying you are going to give up smoking, drinking and watching pornography, you’re basically saying that you are going to make 2011 more boring than 2010.

Makes sense.  That said, last week I wrote that I had made just one resolution in 2010, and that was to ensure I was still in business come 31st December 2010.

I made it – just – and this year I was going to make no resolutions at all.  There are things that I’d like to achieve in 2011, obviously.  I like writing, so I’ll continue writing to this blog; I enjoyed cycling a lot last year and this year I’ve already got one ride organised with my best mate, Matt, but I’d like to get more in.  Maybe I’ll ride the London to Cambridge again, or do the London to Brighton ride, and the London to Paris ride is looking tempting, but could be a little prohibitive this year; I turn 40 next year, maybe I’ll do it then…

And 2011 is the year of looking at career opportunities, and maybe considering life after the pub.  That’s not because we’re looking to leave the pub just yet, but trade is tight for many a small business and it’s maybe time to hand the reigns of the day-to-day business over to Ali while I get on with the task of bringing another income in to the house.  At least, that way, we might be able to have a holiday this year…

… which would be the other thing I’d love to achieve in the next twelve months!  It’s nearly three years since we visited the apartment in Spain which, as far as I’m concerned, is too long.  I love it out there and have missed not being able to get out to it.  It would also be nice to just get a couple of short breaks in this year as well – time away from the pub is as valuable as time in it.

But if there is one thing I’m going to resolve to achieve this year, it’s to catch up with my friends.  I achieved last year’s resolution simply by focusing heavily on keeping the pub trading throughout what was undoubtedly a difficult year.  It meant not being able to have a holiday, but it also meant not being able to spend time with friends and family.

Indeed, if it hadn’t been for Facebook many friends would have not been in contact with me at all throughout 2010.  That’s a shame so, regardless of business, during 2011 I intend to catch up with friends, old and new, who I’ve not seen for a while…

Happy new Year!
